Date #27: YakiMIX

After a long hiatus from our hell-ish Midterms season, we’re back! Earlier today, we visited YakiMIX, an eat-all-you-can buffet restaurant that serves a wide variety of Japanese dishes and a few other Chinese dishes. Installed under every table is also a Smokeless Griller which is quite fascinating since no matter how many people grill at the same time, it never smells inside.

A lunch buffet costs 499 per head. Meanwhile, dinner costs P580 per head. Kids below 4 feet can dine for P380. Add P65 for unlimited drinks. If you don’t get to finish everything on your plate, it would cost P699. All prices are exclusive of VAT.

If you want to dine in YakiMIX, make sure you reserve beforehand (check the numbers above). It’s an eat-all-you-can restaurant, so you can’t expect people to leave fast after sitting down. We went there for lunch on a Monday, and the place was still packed, despite the fact that not many people go out during Mondays.

Of course, I targeted the sushi bar first, being the sushi monster that I am. My favorites were the Prawn Sushi on the left side and the Dynamite Salmon Maki (Can’t remember the exact name) on the upper right. I found everything quite delightful. They have good quality control, despite the place being an eat-all-you-can buffet.

On hindsight, I could have eaten much more of their sushi, if Douglas had not restrained me, and said, “sushi can be filling, don’t eat too much, blah blah blah”.

I don’t have pictures of the actual sushi bar since the establishment didn’t let me take pictures.

Douglas, being a salmon fan, had this slab of salmon all to himself.

He said that the quality was better than most buffets.

Finally, the grill. My favorites were the mushrooms wrapped in thin strips of bacon as well as the duck meat. The beef selection was alright for me, could be better if we had not overcooked it :-/ Despite the overcooking, though, it remained tender.

Be careful when grilling pork, raw pork is not the safest thing to eat.

It’s easier to grill prawns since you’d easily notice once they’re cooked. They turn bright orange.

Useless fact: I learned today that Douglas can skin a prawn with his mouth :O That’s a useful skill if you don’t like using your hands while eating.

Our platter of Ebi Tempura was the natural favorite among the things we ate. They had a nice bite and crunchiness to them.

Be alert though, Tempura quickly runs out when served on the table. That’s a disadvantage when eating in buffet restaurants, you sometimes have to compete with the other customers for the best dishes.

Douglas got this plate of Udon (Yakisoba?) for himself as a break from all the meat. I think he would have preferred it if they had used real crab meat instead of kani sticks. I don’t know if I should write it as Udon or Yakisoba because they used Udon noodles Yakisoba-style.

I loved the cheesecake, it was a good end to my meal.

The Verdict: I’m not an eat-all-you-can buffet person. I don’t like stuffing my face with food just so I’d get what I’m paying for. But YakiMIX is relatively on the average price range, so I’m not under any pressure to eat too much. Despite it being a buffet, too, they have good quality control.

I suppose the only comment I’d say is, dont ever, ever, make your boyfriend/girlfriend prevent you from getting what you want from the buffet table, even if it’s filled with rice, like sushi. But anyway, I’m already looking forward to our next YakiMIX visit.

Irrelevant but possibly useful comment: Douglas said their MOA branch is better, so try that one instead, if possible. The owner, who also happens to be Douglas’ family friend, normally stays there, so I suppose they have better quality control over there.
