Chef Dogan Turkish Grill & Restaurant is one of the restaurants in town that you should really try. It offers authentic Turkish cuisine prepared by a Turkish chef. What I find remarkable about it, though, is that it offers much more than just uniqueness—besides being the only Turkish restaurant in the area, it also provides quality food that you’re sure to enjoy.

This is a view of the second floor. The setting is casual and relaxing.

We started with an order of Babaganuc (P115) which is an appetizer composed of eggplant, tomato and chili—three things which I like in my food. The taste dominantly comes from the eggplant, which I think goes really well with the bread. It’s served slightly cold, though.

The flat bread was served warm and fresh.

Douglas tried a glass of Ayran (P85) which is a yogurt-based beverage. He asked it to be served sweet, which deviates from its traditional salty blend. Unlike other yogurts we’ve tried elsewhere, Chef Dogan’s yogurt was not served like a shake. It was literally a yogurt drink. :)

This place is known for their Karisik Izgara (P395), which is a plate of mixed kebabs. I truly couldn’t believe how we effortlessly chewed on the meat. It was tenderized to a point that it crumbles easily under your teeth, but retains a good, solid structure while still on your plate. Unlike the other kebabs that drown in spices, Chef Dogan’s kebabs pride themselves on glorifying the taste of meat. And it was good meat, indeed.

I wanted to be more adventurous rather than just ordering pieces of grilled lamb chops or grilled chicken. So I took the plunge and ordered a plate of Iskender Beef (P285). I’m glad I did. When I took the first bite, I thought to myself, “This is so weird.” But I kept on eating. And eating. And eating. Chef Dogan’s Iskender Beef was served with a mix of tomato sauce and thick yogurt, which was truly a strange combination of flavors, but merged wonderfully.
A warning, though, this isn’t for people who don’t like yogurt :P (Obviously.)

Douglas had been naughty and took a taste of the Riwana (P75) before I could take a picture of it. He was amazed at it, though, because of the layers of sweet syrup that were tucked inside the foamy dessert. You should try this.

The Verdict: It’s a great place to try, whether for adventurous couples, friends or families. On a lucky day, too, you’ll get to meet the chef behind it all (who’s usually in the resto overseeing the operations). We went here after a very stressful day in school (Ugh, end this sem already!) and came out with smiling faces.
