Date # 70: Jang-Gun Korean Restaurant

I hate rain. I hate everything about it. I hate how it makes my socks soggy, I hate how it ruins my shoes, I hate how it causes traffic, and I hate how it can make me sick so easily. What’s worse, my reasons to hate rain is nothing compared to the true devastations it can cause—flash floods, ruined crops, destroyed homes, and the list goes on.

So after an exhausting and stressful morning from the rain, we trooped over to Jang-Gun Korean Restaurant to unwind. It’s relatively one of the less popular Korean restaurants in the Metro, as compared to Kaya or Ye Dang, but one shouldn’t take this place for granted.

Douglas and I are both fans of Korean food, although we don’t eat at Korean restaurants too often. We find Korean food painful for our budgets. We didn’t care much about spending that day, though, since we both had terrible mornings and we needed some comforting food to get our moods up.

The restaurant was practically empty when we arrived, and they only had one server, but he was really attentive and helpful.

Attached on every table are grillers as well as ventilation systems for your barbecuing pleasure.

There were some unusual things in the selection of Korean appetizers, like the seaweed, and the ubod. None of these particularly stood out for me.

Jang-Gun used eggs and scallions for the complimentary soup, which was served hot. It was the perfect soothing regimen for the cold weather.

Ordering Dolsot Bibimbap (P270) is always a dilemma for us, because we prefer to have plain rice to go with our grilled meat. Good thing Jang-Gun’s Dolsot Bibimbap proved worthy of our expectations. Bean sprouts, julienned carrots, sliced cucumber, sliced squash and thinly sliced beef sprinkled with sesame seeds rested on top of a steaming hot bowl of rice. The flavor of each ingredient balanced out very well to make this dish a phenomenal one. (Tip: make sure to add chili paste for an added kick!)

We ordered two kinds of meat for grilling. The first one was So-Galbi : Marinated Beef Short Ribs BBQ (P350). The barbecue marinade seeped through every grain of the beef, and made it rich with sweet and smoky barbecue flavors. The meat was so tender that there really was really no trouble eating it. It was a bit pricey for the meager serving, though.

The second kind of meat we ordered was the Galbisal: Fresh Roast Beef Cutlets BBQ (P500). I must admit that it took me a while before I got used to the taste of beef that’s not marinated. But we all know that good beef needs only a light seasoning of salt and pepper, and it’s good to go. The same applies with this one. This dish highlighted the goodness of all natural, good quality beef. All it needed was a little dip in sesame oil and salt and pepper. Each beef cutlet had the right amount of fat to add an ample amount of silkiness and richness.

Be sure not to let it get cold, though, or else it will get tough.

You can also choose to eat the meat ssambap style, since they’re served with a fresh pile of lettuce and flavorings. To do that, you take a mound of plain rice, add in some flavorings and some beef, and then finally wrap it in lettuce. Friends, this is the way to make anyone eat vegetables!

Overall Verdict: We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Jang-Gun. The place was relaxing, and the food was great. It’s a little pricier than other Korean restaurants, though. Nevertheless, it’s highly recommended. The servings are great for small groups, so I’m sure people going on a date won’t have trouble with excess food.

CamDoug Trivia: Although we’re both gamers at heart, we don’t normally play video games together. I prefer going solo by playing console games, while he prefers to play PC games with his friends.
