O’sonho Portuguese Fusion is an underrated restaurant. It never made a buzz in the blogosphere, nor did it ever become a hot topic in social networks. But O’sonho is a place worth checking out—they serve mainly spicy food, with peri-peri (a kind of African chili) chicken being their specialty. That’s not the only thing they’re good for, though. They also serve paella, Filipino-Portuguese fusion dishes, as well as unique varieties of meat and seafood.

Douglas and I arrived at O’sonho at around 3pm, which explains why the place was empty except for a few tables. O’sonho has a mini bar that serves mixed drinks, a string of tables that can accommodate large groups, as well as cushioned seats for those who plan on staying for long hours, chatting and drinking.

As a starter, we ordered the newest item on the menu: a platter of Salmon Croquettes (P280). O’sonho’s croquettes are perfectly crunchy on the outside and are smooth and creamy on the inside. Minced bits of salmon are tucked inside the mixture along with various herbs and spices. The sauce that’s served with the croquettes is rich, tartar-y, and it complements the croquettes well.

I came here following the rumor that O’sonho’s Peri-Peri Chicken (P210/solo) is the best peri-peri chicken in town. And I can say it’s true. O’sonho only makes use of butterflied chicken thigh, to ensure that we’re served the juiciest, meatiest and most tender part of the chicken. It’s served with a cup of fragrant rice that just captivates you the moment its heavenly aroma wafts through the air.
On the side is a serving of peri-peri chili submersed in olive oil that you can liberally top on your chicken, depending on your tolerance. The chili is not too strong, it’s actually quite mild, but it packs a lot of flavor.

Douglas was more adventurous with his order. He got a Coffee Marinated Roast Pork (P420), which is composed of a hefty slab of pork belly that’s been marinated in a coffee-herb mixture, coated with bittersweet sauce, and then served with a mound of mashed potatoes. If the concept seems strange to you, don’t worry. O’sonho makes sure that the flavors aren’t too strong so as to put off your palate. The balance of flavors was just right for us—savory, but with a hint of sweetness and bitterness from the coffee.

For dessert, we got an Almond Sansrival (P260). O’sonho’s sansrival is nuttier than your usual sansrival because of the thick layers of crushed almonds underneath the cream and butter frosting. I like it better this way because it’s not too sweet.

From 2-5pm, O’sonho offers unlimited coffee for its visitors. This went well with our dessert, although the coffee is a bit too bitter for our tastes.
Overall Verdict: O’sonho’s for those people who want to try something adventurous and unusual, but don’t want to risk going to a restaurant that’s just upsetting.
We thought that everything was cooked excellently. They also have an attentive staff that is sure to refill your glasses without being prompted, and is happy to respond to your questions knowledgeably. We’ll be happy to return.
